Federal Skilled Workers

Skilled workers and their families comprise the majority of new immigrants to Canada.  They are selected on the basis of their ability to become economically established in Canada, with the aim that they should fill shortages in the Canadian labour market, thereby contributing to Canada through their work and taxes.

Federal Skilled Worker Category (FSWC)

This category allows persons who have at least one year of skilled work experience to apply for permanent residence in Canada, provided they obtain sufficient points under the point score system. Federal Skilled Workers must apply under the Express Entry system rather than directly to a Visa Office.

Requirements for Federal Skilled Workers Category

To qualify as a skilled worker, the applicant must have at least one year of skilled work experience .  Skilled occupations are those that fall under Skill types O, A, or B of the National Occupation Classification (NOC). NOC is a comprehensive listing of employment occupations in Canada. O occupations are managerial in nature, A occupations are professional, and B occupations are technical jobs and skilled trades. To qualify as Full Time experience, the occupation must constitutes at least 30 hours per week of continuous employment, or the equivalent in part time work.   This experience must be gained within the last 10 years to be considered.

Assessment

A preliminary requirement for applicants is to pass a point system test to assess whether they are likely to become successfully established in Canada. The point system considers six factors related to the applicant and a score is assigned to each factor. If the applicant’s total score meets the pass mark then the applicant potentially meets the requirements for the Skilled Worker category.  The applicant needs to score at least 67 points out of 100.

The factors measured are:

1.       Education – 25 points

2.       Language Skills (English and French) – 28 points

3.       Work Experience – 15 points

4.       Age – 12 points

5.       Arranged Employment – 10 points

6.       Adaptability – 10 points

The scores awarded under these categories depend on various factors and are complex.  Kindly contact our offices at info@overmeyerlaw.ca for assistance on completing your FREE ASSESSMENT to determine your eligibility to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker category.
